Extended Schools

'... a network of Extended Schools across Northern Ireland supporting the raising of school standards, fostering the health, well-being and social  inclusion of children and young people and the regeneration and transformation of local communities. Schools can be hubs of their local community offering a range of activities before, during and beyond the traditional school day, engaging with their local community, connecting local people with local services.'  Maria Eagle MP Minister for Education from 'Extended Schools    schools, families, communities - working together'

Bushmills Primary School has been involved in the Extended School Initiative since its inception in 2006/07. In that time it has provided an 'after school club' for pupils running five days a week during term time; three very successful computer courses for parents and other members of the local community; a British Red Cross First Aid course for parents and staff; a beauty evening for parents; a reading support group for P1 and P2 parents; a cookery course for P7 children and additional rugby, badminton, cricket and table tennis courses for the children.  Since September 2008 a 'breakfast club' has also operated five mornings a week in the school. From 8.30am children can come into school for a breakfast of cereal, toast and milk or fruit juice. Subsidized from the Extended School Budget the healthy breakfast costs only 50p.  The breakfasts are provided by the school's own kitchen and the children are supervised by Extended School Staff and Senior Teachers.
